Film Review: Ruby Sparks

Ruby Sparks comes out in theaters (in Canada) in August 2012.

This is a film that is Comedy, Fantasy and Romance all wrapped in one. It is about a novelist named Calvin  who wrote a very successful book a decade ago and now he starts dreaming and writing about a girl he made up. One day, she appears in his house as his girlfriend. What could possibly go wrong with that? He said he was lonely and wanted a girlfriend.

I was very lucky to get a hold of 2 tickets to their very advance screening of Ruby Sparks with a special guest appearance from both actors. Paul Dano as Calvin the writer and writer/actress Zoey Kazan did an interview after the screening.

What happen in  the interview?!

It was great. Both actors (Paul and Zoey) seemed so comfortable together as though they were long time friends rather than co-stars. But one of them does leak out a little secret. I'll tell you about it later. ;)

The film itself was shot last summer and it took about 30 days to film and a couple months of pre-production. All the scenes were shot in L.A.

My review of the Ruby Sparks: It definitely had a thick comedy overtone, but it was whole mixture of comedy/fantasy/romance that really helped this film be unique and creative on its own. Zoey mentioned, as she was the  first writer of the film, that she got inspired for this film when she was walking home one day and pass a Macy's. In the back alley, she thought she saw a person in the trash, but it turned out to be a mannequin. And then many months later, coming back and leaving the script and coming back to it, she was reminded of the Greek myth, Pygmalion. A modern day twist to the Greek myth where the sculptor carves out a woman made of ivory and then falls in love with her. Pygmalion gets Venus to grant him a wish, and the statue becomes human and they live happily ever after. With the same idea as it's starting point, the film takes on a very human experience in a fantastical situation.

There were a few a dark scenes that link the rest of the comedic scenes together. They don't overpower the film, instead gives great light to how serious the emotions were running and how deep the pysche is. It's tragic but light.

Overall, I rate this film: 4/5

When it comes out, you must watch this film if you are a believer in love, forgiveness and goodness.

And remember that little secret I was telling you about? Well... the reason why these two actors are so great together is because they're dating in real life. At the interview, they're clothes were both matchy match. Very cute! Great chemistry and great laughs together! ;p
