Food Review: Avenue Open Kitchen

At a nearby diner, I go for my first time to try what my co-workers call "good food" at Avenue Open Kitchen (Richmond St West/Spadina area).

For all the locals around, they provide daily specials. Each day is different. I went on the day they had short ribs. Sounding very tasty and realizing I haven't had a "southern meal" in quite some time, we all head out to grab some food for lunch at Avenue.

With very limited seating at the venue itself, we opted to get take out and bring it back to work.

All the same order of short ribs.

With a side of mashed potatoes, vegetables and 2 buttered slices of bread, the short ribs made for a very tasty and more-than-enough to fill anyone's stomach.

The short ribs had a very succulent sauce and tenderized ribs with meat that fall-off-the-bone. The vegetables were rather plain with very little taste. And the potatoes were even better after I add the short ribs' drippings over the top. And lastly, the bread was not much to talk about -plain but filling.

Overall, it did the job and if so, it lasted me through dinner as well.

Take out was quick, food was good.... overall a solid 3.8/5 stars for Avenue Open Kitchen in downtown Toronto.

Korean drama watch: BIG

It's been a while since I've done my 16 hours of watching-k-dramas like there was no more tomorrow. It can get very exhausting after your 10th drama... well, really depending on your vision and internet streaming strength.

After being in the military for a little over 5 years, one of my favorite korean actors, Gong Yoo (also his last drama before going into the military, 1st Shoppe Coffee Prince, was my first korean drama ever) came right back into the game with a fairly new drama called BIG.

(courtesy of google photos and KBS)

It's ultimately about a body switch between 2 guys (student and a doctor) and a girl they both know -in some way. To one, she is his teacher and to the other, he is her fiancee.

I have yet to finish, with only one episode remaining. After watching 1st Shoppe Coffee Prince and then in this role, I was very disappointed. His acting stayed the same, but it was the story that didn't quite make it as a hit show for me.

But for me, I like to watch Gong Yoo no matter what. He is a delight at comedy and his adult and childish ways are always very entertaining.

Food Review: Richmond Court

On my "work trip" up in Richmond Hill, we went to the local eats.

For breakfast, my co-workers and I had a nice meal at Richmond Court in Times Square (Hwy 7/Leslie).

Medium busy on a Saturday morning, we head in with hungry stomachs to start our work day.

Along with the regular "big" menu, they have a morning breakfast menu that is dirt cheap. One of my favorites is ordering #F, Butter pineapple bun (HK style hot milk tea included).

A toasted pineapple bun with a slice of butter was an indulgence that I enjoy whenever I make it uptown for some chinese grub.

Their "hot milk tea" is definitely a good tea. It wasn't too watery. Of course it would have been much better had they use condensed milk instead of evaporated milk. My preference.

Other tasty morning items:

Bean Curd wrap, Congee and Sweet & Sour Soup

Ha Gow (a dim sum favorite, steamed shrimp)

Since my younger days, I've frequent Richmond Court on and off since I was a young little girl. And to this day it has never disappointed me.

Rate it 4/5 for it's consistency.

Food Review: Eggs Memphis (Insomnia)

BRUNCH IN NOVEMBER
Insomnia Restaurant and lounge

Insomnia does eggs benedict in so many different ways....
Eggs Benedict
Eggs Charlotte
Eggs Lorraine
Eggs Isabelle
Eggs Florentine
Eggs Manami (gluen-free)
Eggs Memphis

During a celebratory brunch, we both ordered the Eggs Memphis because of one ingredient: Pulled Pork

After a successful pulled pork meal many weeks ago, I was hooked. And when Insomnia had a pulled pork eggs Benedict, I just couldn't resist.

The Eggs Memphis was absolutely delicious.

Salad | ..... Evenly distributed dressing on every leaf
Pulled pork | ........ Sweet and melts-in-your-mouth
Poached eggs | ....... Ooooozing liquid gold, cooked perfectly
Potatoes | ....... Pulled pork flavored -aaamazing

And to end (and/or start) it off with a taste of sweet, we got a blueberry smoothie. Not fatty at all, it was a very refreshing smoothie. However, taste wise, it was a bit too watery. =0(

Overall, it was a incredibly delicious meal!

Hotel Review: Holiday Inn Express (Richmond Hill)

Had some business up in Richmond Hill last week and so we stayed at Holiday Inn Express just north of Hwy 7 just off of Leslie Street.

Across the street from the chinese plaza, Times Square, this spacious and modern hotel had a nice first impression.

The foyer had a wide foyer traffic area and off to the side a comfy sitting area. Just behind the sitting area, they had a complimentary computer (Apple iMac) for patrons to use, right by the elevators. And even further into the hotel, still in the lobby, they have a nicely arranged lounge/sitting area that doubles turns as their breakfast area. It is very spacious and open.

The amenities were very clean and modern. Our double bed room had a very nice long headboard that stretches from one bed to the other. I like how there's lots of counter space by the television. They have a desk area near the window for any needed sit down work, but I do prefer my bed! =0)

Of course, one of the perks of staying here was the complimentary breakfast. With a good size menu, they also provide a few "hot" options such as make-it-yourself pancakes, scramble eggs and sausages.

I opted for a bagel/sausage/cream cheese trio with a side of scramble eggs and an Activia yogurt.

The service was also very pleasant and the location was convenient.

Overall, I would rate this 4.5/5 stars

Homemade Style Eggs Beney

Sometimes, it's nice to get creative in the kitchen when you've got time.

Today, I woke up early and decided to indulge in a hot breakfast.

What's the recipe:
1 bagel (multigrain)
2 eggs, sunny side up
Topped with season salt

Toast the bagel and then assemble.

And don't forget that it always taste better when the egg yolk is under cooked.

=0)

Happy breakfast talk!

Food Review: Springbox Kitchen

They do healthy

Let's find out how they did.....

Located at a very lovely neighborhood by Portland/King St. West

As I entered, I immediately noticed how narrow, dark and empty the restaurant was. I got there around 1:30pm and there were 2 staff working quietly behind the counter. They did acknowledge me, but I was busy looking up to the neon lights/menu on the wall behind them. The menu itself was very big and long and playfully clever with the "Nutrition Facts" title.

They offer a variety of shakes, sandwiches, salads and sweets. I was happy to be able to visually see how my order was being made.

My lunch order:

This was my Prosciutto and Bocconcin sandwich ($9.95) with a ice cold refreshing Tropic Thunder smoothie ($5.49).

The portion size was fairly large and the smoothie itself was very tasty. Try one for yourself and you'll find out.

My sandwich was also another great hit. Eating it, I felt that it was very delicious without the oils added.

They had interesting seating.. and by that I mean some seats had board games on top. One had a chess table and another had Jenga. With the rest of the seating, they had 2 tables in the front (with good lighting) and 4 tables in the back (much darker).

Overall, the experience was a good one.

Location: Great neighborhood
Price: $$
Service: Friendly staff (a lady I chatted with pleasantly), 4/5
Atmosphere: 2/5

It's a good place to get good, healthier food. However, it's not the great go-to for a hang out with friends.
